Did you vote?

May 16th, 2007 by tingog2

Did you exercise your right to suffrage?   Did you vote in the recent May 14th election?

If you were eligible to vote, and you didn’t, then why didn’t you?

I’m often amazed at the massive numbers of youth who either don’t give a damn about what is happening in Philippine Politics or complain too much about it.

As Filipinos, I believe that it is not only our right to vote, but it is our duty to vote.  We cannot complain if we ourselves do not exercise our duty in voting.

This past election, there was the usual cases of intimidation, fraud, cheating, and violence.  Overall, it does look like it was more of a peaceful election this time around.

The exercise of democracy is not perfect, but it is an exercise in our freedom to choose that is a powerful right that some countries do not have at the moment.

Our national heroes of the past have shed their blood in order for us to gain this freedom, we must not waste their sacrifices.

In the end, I hope you did vote, and I hope you keep active in your role as a Filipino, no matter where you are and what you do…

Even if you can’t vote, take part in securing the vote, and let us not let corrupt officials and politicians steal our votes..

Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to
someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of
torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort
those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless
deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human
rights are respected..

Forced Poverty

February 19th, 2007 by tingog2

Is it enough for us to work for a better life? What does it mean to
work, if all you do is stay in the status quo? Or worse, lose the the
little that you had to begin with?

I look all around me, but cannot see the promises, or even the boast
of economic increase that our politicians bombard us with. The election
is about giving voice to the people, and making them heard… Or is it?

Nowadays, it’s all about power.  How you can gain it and/or how you can keep it.
